This is the second book in the series. Whilst it can be read as a standalone book, there are lots of characters and references to the previous book, so I would recommend reading them in order. I have read the first story in the series, so was familiar with the plot and the characters. The prologue is set 16 days before the start of the main story and is set at Charing Cross Police Station in London. Whilst the prologue is short, it is obvious that Michael O’Rowde is dead. Of course, you don’t find out why or how, but as the story unfolds all becomes clear.
When the story moves to present day, we are reacquainted with Billy May, who is now 40 years old, and Richard. Richard is set to propose to Billy when Michael’s wife, Jessie arrives unannounced. There is obviously a lot of history between the characters, but for those who haven’t yet read the first book, the history is well explained so you are able to follow the story.
Initially, I found Billy May’s character not as likeable as I thought she was in the first book, although I did warm to her as the story moved on. She seemed to get angry easily with Richard for being unromantic in his proposal and for booking a holiday when she was worried about leaving the farm, and I did feel quite sorry for him! The fact that she also had an affair with Michael and would rather sort out her guilt over this rather than try and sort out her relationship with Richard made me definitely want to side with him!
There are lots of topics going on throughout the book, resulting in an intriguing and suspense filled read. It’s a story full of secrets, lies, betrayals and of course, the death of Michael. Some of the characters are controlling and manipulative and this left me on the edge of my seat wondering how this story was going to end.
The end of the story was great and the last chapter has left me hanging there in anticipation as to what was revealed! I really hope there will be another instalment to the story to explain this more! It was not only a story of romance and love, but of mystery and intrigue. It was well written and well researched with some great characters! Would definitely recommend!
